Where is sogn and the Sognefjord?
If you take a look at the map of Norway you will surely find the longest fjord on the Norwegian Costline with the name: SOGNEFJORD.
As the US is divided into 50 states Norway is divided into 20 fylke. Each fylke is divided into districts, each district is divided into communities (kommune in Norwegian) and each community is divided into parishes. Some very large communities, like Luster, can be compared with the US county. Sogn is located in the area around the Sognefjord and is one of three districts in the Sogn og Fjordane Fylke. The other two are Sunnfjord and Nordfjord. The Sognefjord is the longest Fjord and is known for its uniqueness in size, beauty and culture. Many Norwegian – Americans of Sogning descent are proud to preserve their Sogn cultural heritage. The Sognefjordlag was created as a result of this desire, with the members now extending to all corners of America. |
The ancentry of these proud descendants are linked to the communities of AURLAND, BALESTRAND, GULEN (which contains former Eivindvik and Brekke), HYLLESTAD, HØYANGER (which contains Kirkebø and Lavik), LEIKANGER, LUSTER (which contains former Hafslo, Jostedal and Luster), LÆRDAL (which contains former Borgund and Lærdal), SOGNDAL, SOLUND – since 1888 (which contains former Utvær), VIK and ÅRDAL.
